Speaking Part 3:

1. Do you think Vietnamese people often wait in line?

In the past, during the 1970s when our country was still under the system of budget subsidies, waiting in line to get food and staples are a pretty common sight in Vietnam. However, as the years unfolded, there was a period when people favor doing whatever they can to squeeze their way up and lines are basically non-existent, creating many chaotic scenes in coffee shops, festivals and amusement parks. At present, however, I think I could proudly say that the culture of standing in line and waiting until your turn comes has been nurtured among youngsters and lots of adults. In a number of universities, waiting in front of the lift in very, like, organized lines has been pretty common, as well as in supermarkets, and stores and restaurants. So I think this is a very positive trend, and something that needs to be further encouraged in our country.

  • budget subsidy (n.phrase): thời bao cấp
  • staple (n): nhu yếu phẩm
  • non-existent (adj): không tồn tại
  • chaotic scene (n.phrase): cảnh tượng kinh hoàng
  • nurture (v): nuôi dưỡng

2. Do you think the development of technology has reduced the time people spend on waiting?

Definitely yes for me. Modern technology has no doubt enabled the staff in public places or places that provide service to work faster and more efficiently. An example of this is how quick you can pay for your food and drinks in restaurants and shops compared to the past, thanks to electronic cash registers. In HCM city of Vietnam, there are many shops with machines that help people choose their drinks without having to come to the waiters and waitresses, and this has certainly saved lots of time waiting.

  • Cash register (n): máy tính tiền

3. What do you think of those who cut in line or jump the queue?

These people can, to be frank, cause annoyance and inconvenience. But on the other hand, I also know that we all have our circumstances, and if they have a reason to want to be further up in line and kindly ask for it, it would not be much of a problem in my opinion. There may be pregnant women who cannot really stand for long, people who are ill and are in need of being supported as soon as possible, or workers that are running late out there. For others who are not in urgent or unwell states, letting those aforementioned special people jump in line is not something too terrible and unfair to me.

  • annoyance (adj): khó chịu
  • inconvenience (adj): bất tiện
  • Run late (v.phrase): đi muộn

4. How can companies improve their customer service?

Customer service is a very broad term and it’s not easy to give a comprehensive answer as to how companies can improve this sector. However, for me, there are 2 helpful suggestions. First of all, firms should train their staff to be polite and friendly. These virtues usually help create a good impression and a sense of being respected in clients, hence making their experience happier and more comfortable. Moreover, as this is the time when technology changes and develops every single day, it is essential that companies take note of the trends in terms of technology used in their service, and provide their employees with what would be useful in increasing the efficiency level.

  • Customer service (n): dịch vụ khách hàng
  • virtue (n): phẩm chất.
