At the workplace, employees could be inspired to perform by a myriad of motives. Many argue that among these, money is the most impactful driver. Although the validity of this view is ostensibly well-accepted, I am more inclined to express my disagreement.
No rebuttal, however, is complete without examining the justification for such a belief first. Rarely ever does somebody sustain a livelihood without a source of income, so for those whose employment serves as their only lifeline, striving at work is necessary to keep their lives in order. This is especially true for people who relocate a long distance for their profession; with help hindered by geography, they would have even more reason to be driven by financial motives at the workplace. Beyond that, money fuels aspirations, for extra income not spent affording necessities can allow people to climb a step higher on the social ladder with expensive purchases. Given these possibilities, it is hardly surprising that wages could drive staff morale and diligence.
Yet, in the face of this analysis, I do not find it apt to concede that money motivates best at work. Certain factors do exist to overshadow financial gain, such as belief in a purpose. The most gallant and intrepid deeds at war – a soldier’s professional environment – could only manifest in those loyal to their countries and their brothers-in-arms, and never in those that answer to the glitter of gold. Another aspect that potentially transcends money is rapport with one’s colleagues. In this, I seem to recall Jony Ive, the genius designer whose career at Apple did not take off until Steve Jobs returned to the firm. According to Ive himself, their mutual understanding was such that their visions regarding product design were practically one. Jobs entrusted designing to Ive completely, and the latter worked hard to turn Apple into the revolution in consumer electronics it is today.
It is by the aforementioned points that I believe money is not necessarily the deciding factor for how impassioned employees would be at work. When looking at somebody’s enthusiasm for an organization, there are drivers that elevate it more than money could.
