The two tables display the actual number and the percentage change of overseas students who went to schools in Canada and the US in two school years of 2003 and 2004. In general, the total number of international students experienced a growth in Canada, particularly in terms of Chinese and Indian students, while the corresponding figure for the US saw a minor decline.
Of the international students surveyed in Canada, Chinese students made up the highest figures in both school years, with 5400 and 7850 in 2002-2003 and 2003-2004, respectively. It is also notable that these numbers happened to change by the largest margin, with a 45% increase. Students coming from India, although remaining the least in both years, also saw a large rise of 39% from 2100 to 2835. American students stayed relatively unchanged at the second position, growing from 5000 to 5450.
In contrast, the figures paint a different picture in the US. Indian students are by far the most prevalent. Even after a small 9% decrease from 200000 to 182000, the figure is still almost double that of the second most popular international student nationality, the Chinese, which grew slightly from 110000 to 116600. Lastly, Canadian students made up a minor proportion, growing from 31000 to 33170 between the two school years.
