I’m not much of a business nerd, but there is a businessman that I have a lot of respect for, which is Tim Cook, the current CEO of Apple.

I know the symbolic human of this brand should be Steve Jobs as he has always been acknowledged as a genius by the public in general. Actually, I had never heard of Cook’s name until 2014, when he replaced Steve Jobs to become the company’s CEO. So, I started to browse all the information about him.

In fact, this man is called a logistics figure in the business. He began his career at IBM, a multinational technology corporation. After a few changes of jobs in different companies, his final destination was Apple. It was an illogical decision because; firstly, Tim was working for Compaq, the most successful technology company at the time; and secondly, Apple was a sinking ship. The brand didn’t make much profit that year and its whole fate depended on the upcoming product a lot.

When he entered Apple, he turned the situation around. He enforced termination of factories and warehouses; and contract manufacturers were substituted for them, which was an economic measure to cut the company’s budget. As a result, this strategy also reduced the inventory that Apple had to maintain.

Tim Cook is also a visionary player, for he decided to invest in flash memory cards in 2005, which is one of the key elements when customers buy phones these days. Products like iPad or iPhones were produced with various memory capacities. When they were launched, they had made Apple’s name in the market.

Tim Cook was never in the limelight like Steve Jobs, so the controversies around the question why he was nominated as the CEO were understandable. Needless to say, the revenue that Apple has been earning under his leadership has proved them all.

Vocabulary highlight

– Logistics (n): ngành hậu cần

– Turn sth around: thay đổi điều gì theo hướng tích cực

– Termination (n): sự ngừng

– Substitute (v): thay thế

– Inventory (n): hàng tồn kho

– Flash memory card (n): thẻ nhớ

– Limelight (n): sự chú ý từ truyền thông

Sample Speaking Part 3

– Do you think children are born smart or they learn to become smart?

I think innate intelligence is true. I can give you an example of a child prodigy which is Mozart. He composed his first piece of published music at age 5, and by his teen years, he had already written several concertos, sonatas, operas, and symphonies. However, countless child geniuses do not grow into adult geniuses. In fact, the number of child geniuses is far less than those who become successful due to diligence, determination and luck.

– How do children become smart at school?

It can be through an academic endeavor or how often they associate with peers with diverse backgrounds. I suppose one is IQ and the other is EQ.

– Why are some people well-rounded and others only good at one thing?

The only thing I can say about this is that it depends a lot on the inherent abilities of a person. For example, Michael Jackson can dance and sing appealingly while Dua Lipa, a singer having a great voice, doesn’t have that stage presence.

– Why does modern society need talents of all kinds?

Simply because without them, we would have an unbalanced workforce. Let me elaborate more. You know, at school, we are taught different skills and different subjects and one of the quests of education is for each and everyone to discover themselves and find out what one is good at. Imagine if everyone in society is trained to be doctors or lawyers, who would teach young children, who drive buses, and cook and clean? We can not underestimate the importance of any career and say that one is more valuable than another.

In the age of tech obsession like today, a smartphone teeming with a variety of useful apps is so crucial that those without it are immediately considered behind the time. I also have one for my own and the app that I find among the most beneficial for me is Google Maps – an app that assists in navigation.

Google Maps is the archetype of a web mapping service so nearly everyone who has a smartphone has to have it. I myself am no exception as when my parents bought me one during my secondary school years, I downloaded Google Maps right away.

Using Google Maps is not that hard because simply put, it’s just an online map but the way you make use of that app is what matters. This app comes in handy to me mostly in self-navigation and route planning, especially when I am in an unfamiliar place like when I was a university freshman coming to Hanoi or traveling to a faraway destination.

Google Maps has helped me a great deal in familiarizing myself with the road system of a place and molding me as “a living Google Maps”, as my friends often call me. Before,  I was just a freshman who was still wet behind the ears. But now that I use that app so often, I have come to know Hanoi like the back of my hand now, which really impresses my friends, even some of the Hanoi-born ones. When it comes to traveling – my ultimate hobby, Google Maps is my best buddy in navigation, especially in some places with extremely complicated road systems like Dalat or Saigon.

So Google Maps seems to be part and parcel to me whenever on road. But just one small word to remember: Don’t trust Google Maps every time because sometimes, it may lead you to some surprises, mostly not so pleasant.

– tech obsession (n): cuồng công nghệ

To a student, exams are probably big days, and he/she is supposed to stay in the best condition on those days. But in reality, this may not always be the case. It happened to me once when I almost fell asleep during my final exam of Vietnamese Culture, a subject in my college, in my first year of college. Luckily, I managed to stay awake and finish it.

This came from the lack of sleep I had the night before the exam. I had been so nervous that I hardly got any sleep. I had spent the whole day making some final preparations for the test and went to bed early so that I’d have enough energy the next day. But when I got to bed, I didn’t feel sleepy at all. Instead, my mind kept running through pessimistic scenarios where I might mess up my exam and fail it. I was afraid that I would forget what I had learned and prepared and couldn’t finish the test. Eventually, I drifted into sleep unknowingly but only managed to sleep for three or four hours.

Without saying, I woke up the next morning and got to the exam room feeling fatigued from sleep deprivation. Fortunately, the questions were relatively easy and of what I had learned; thus, I did them fairly well. However, I had quite a struggling time trying to fight my sleepiness for the good two hours of the exam. I had to ask permission to go out a few times to get some fresh air and also went to the restroom to wash my face so that I could be more awake.

After this event, I learned to be more relaxed at the time of examination. I realized that no matter how well you prepare for the exams, failure is still feasible without the right state of mind.

Vocabulary highlight

– to stay awake (vp): tỉnh táo

– the lack of sleep (np): thiếu ngủ

– preparation for the test (np): chuẩn bị cho bài thi

– have enough energy (np): không còn đủ năng lượng

– drift into sleep (vp): chìm vào giấc ngủ

– fatigued (adj): mệt mỏi

– sleep deprivation (np): thiếu ngủ

– to fight sth (v): chiến đấu vì cái gì

Sample Speaking Part 3

– When do people need to stay awake when they feel tired?

It’s probably when they are attending some significant events, such as an exam. Also, they may need to be alert too in the time of exam preparation. Some other occasions that people need to be awake can be when they have to take care of a sick family member, carry out a duty, or go traveling.

– How do people stay awake when they are tired?

There are indeed many ways to help people stay awake if they are of low energy. One of the most common ways is to drink coffee or reach out for drinks that contain caffeine, such as energy drinks. However, this is not the ultimate solution as caffeine may have some adverse effects in the long run.

Some other alternatives can be setting a good sleeping routine and getting enough sleep the night before. It is recommended that an adult should take approximately 7-9 hours of sleep at night, and the ideal time to go to bed is before 11 pm. By this, they are likely to stay conscious the next day.

Another option is to take frequent breaks if you are working or studying because remaining too long at one position and prolonged attention may wear you out and reduce productivity. Short and frequent interruptions, in contrast, can actually make you more productive as it is a way to circulate your span of concentration and sustain it.

– What kinds of people are sleep deprived?

I think the kinds of people that are prone to sleep deprivation are either the elderly or people who are suffering from some kind of mental health problem. For seniors, insomnia can come from some health issues that they get when they age. Apart from that, some reports find that elderly sleep deprivation might stem from worries about getting old. Also, older people have different sleeping cycles, so their resting time may be shorter than that of younger people.

For people with mental health issues such as clinical depression, insomnia is also likely to occur. It is partly a result of the disease and partly comes from the medication that people take as a treatment, in some cases.

– Why do people feel tired a lot nowadays?

I suppose this is a problem of modern life. People nowadays tend to lead a work-oriented life with long hours of working. This way of life can lead them to an imbalanced diet, as they don’t have enough time to cook proper meals, and sleep deprivation out of stress. Moreover, the rapid development of technology can also lead to an over-reliance-on-technology lifestyle that makes people more inactive. All of these factors can be the cause of tiredness for people these days.

Let me tell you about my friend, Linh,  whose job I believe is critical to the well-being of our society, especially in this day and age. She is a few years older than me and is currently working as a nurse at our local hospital. Linh is also my neighbor so we get to hang out quite often.

I think Linh’s job is incredibly important, especially amid a raging pandemic like COVID-19. She helps care for patients, communicates with doctors, administers medicine, and check vital signs. Not only does she have to care for the patient, she also supports their families by helping them cope with the illness of their loved ones, and if necessary live with it so that these people can work through the obstacles that may arise with the sickness of a family member. Nurses are always the first to notice when the patient’s conditions change. They must always be ready to spring into action in any emergencies or critical situation

Serving as the front line of healthcare, Linh and other nurses also expose themselves to a lot of risks. For this pandemic, Linh has been taking up numerous long shifts. There are many days when she could not go home because the hospital was understaffed. There are also days when Linh had to quarantine at work due to exposure to a COVID-positive patient. Despite all these difficulties, I have never seen Linh complaining about her job. She has a heart of gold and genuinely seems to find joy in helping people. Thanks to her and other medical professionals, we can deal with all the diseases and illnesses in our lifetime and stay healthy. I always have immense respect for them.

I don’t have a lot of memories traveling, since I am a homebody and prefer to stay put if I can help it. However, a destination really stands out among the rare occasions that I actually go on trips. It is a local market in Sapa, which is a small town in the mountainous area of northern Vietnam. I visited Sapa 2, 3 years ago, I believe, to see the snow that is, you know, quite few and far between in our tropical country. During our stay, we stopped by an outdoor market where locals usually buy an assortment of goods. It was a particularly intriguing and new experience for me.

The first thing I’d like to mention is that the market was a stark difference compared to what I was used to seeing in the city. Hordes of locals were walking around in their traditional attires, which were incredibly colourful and brightened up the whole atmosphere. Around you were all sorts of products, like from special clothing items to fresh ingredients that could not be found elsewhere. But what really attracted me was the collection of traditional ornaments and handicrafts there. After walking around a few stalls, I decided to buy a scarf with distinct tribal patterns and some local souvenirs for my family, all of which were good bargains

All in all, I was glad to visit the market since it offered a chance for me to interact with the very welcoming people in Sapa and immerse myself in an authentic, local environment. For a city girl born and raised like me, the market was a definite eye-opening experience. Besides, I could also support the local communities by buying souvenirs and gifts.  If there’s a chance, I would love to revisit this place.

I’m going to talk about a T-shirt, which is one of the most important pieces of clothing in my closet. As far back as I can remember, it was a present from my mum when I turned 16, and I have used it since then.

I would say that I am not really fashion-conscious, and I don’t feel like keeping up with the latest trend. But I did realize that it was a Boo T-shirt, which is a very prominent high-end brand in Vietnam. The T-shirt is plain white, with a tiny hand embroidered cow in the upper left corner. Besides, it’s made from cotton, hence very durable and perfect for the humid summer. I must say that it is really minimal and exactly to my liking.

To be honest, it is my favorite item and it does go well with everything. I can match it with any kind of skirt or pants like jeans, trousers, and overalls. In fact, it also makes a perfect outer layer for a winter outfit.

However, despite its practicality and versatility, I still don’t wear it too often. As it is white, the T-shirt is really difficult to keep clean. Therefore, I only choose to wear it on special occasions such as a date, a family meeting, or an interview, as a way to boost my self-confidence

All in all, it’s a very meaningful gift from someone I really adore, so I will treasure and continue wearing it in the future. In fact, I don’t think that it will ever be out of fashion, so it’s an easy call
