1. What films do you like?
To be honest, I’m quite easy-going when it comes to movies. I can watch any genre of movie as long as they don’t involve too many violent scenes. I always have to cover my eyes at those points! But if I had to pick only one type of movie I like best, I would have to say comedy. I love to laugh and I find watching comedy movies always boosts my spirits, especially after a stressful day of study.
- easy-going (adj): dễ tính
- Boost (verb): thúc đẩy/kích thích
- Spirit (noun): tinh thần
2. Did you often watch films when you were a child?
Yes, I did. I found watching movies the most exciting way to kick back and relax. I had a special liking for cartoons, actually, because that was the only genre I was allowed to watch. But now, I am partial to dramas which include realistic settings about poverty, prejudice or love, and these films always provoke powerful emotions in me.
- Kick back (phrasal v.): thư giãn
- Have a special liking for (phr.): đặc biệt yêu thích
- To be partial to (phr.): thích cái gì hơn
- Provoke (v.): khơi dậy
3. Did you ever go to the cinema alone as a child?
No, I didn’t watch films at the cinema alone when I was little because none were near my house. Also, my family wasn’t well-off, so a cinema ticket was out of reach for me. I watched a movie on the big screen for the first time when I went to university, and I was overwhelmed by the excellent sound and visual effects.
- Well-off (adj.): giàu có
- Out of reach (phr.): ngoài khả năng/ tầm với
- Overwhelmed (adj): kinh ngạc
- Sound effect (phr.): hiệu ứng âm thanh
- Visual effect (phr.): hiệu ứng hình ảnh
4. Do you often go to the cinema with your friends?
No, I don’t. My friend and I only go to the cinema when our favorite actors’ movies hit the big screen. Instead, we usually choose to watch movies at home as a perfect alternative. We love having a cozy meal together while watching our favorite movie and discussing it freely, which we can’t do at the cinema. Plus, we also can save money on tickets and snacks.
- Hit the big screen (phr.): chiếu tại rạp
- Alternative (n.): sự thay thế
- Save on st (phrasal v.): tiết kiệm tiền
5. Do you think going to the cinema is a good way to spend time with friends?
I think it depends on individual preference. For some people who are moviegoers, cinemas are ideal places because they can discuss while watching, which can create a bond between them. But other people would choose different ways to spend quality time together. They can head to a coffee shop, order their favorite drinks and pass on gossip.
- Moviegoer (n.): người hay đi xem phim chiếu rạp
- Bond (n.): mối quan hệ/ sự gắn kết
- Quality time (phr.): thời gian chất lượng
- Pass on gossip (phr.): nói chuyện tầm phào
