I would like to talk about a natural disaster right in home country. It was a series of forest fires in early July of 2019 that took place in Ha Tinh Province in the middle region of Vietnam.
At that time, Ha Tinh was at the height of summer and striving to prevent any kind of fire. But as there goes a saying “Man proposes, God disposes”, a fire appeared out of nowhere, spread to a few areas in the North of the province, and then to a large stretch of forests in just a few days due to the blazing heat of summer. The province had to make an emergency announcement, employ thousands of firefighters, fire trucks and even volunteers from different provinces. To make the matter worse, there was not a single drop of rain during those peak days.
As I heard on TV, those forest fires took the authorities quite a long time to extinguish and tackle the disaster aftermath. Many people, myself included, felt really heart-broken for the locals and Ha Tinh administrators. However, those feelings quickly turned into public outrage after the police discovered that all those fires were because one person burned the garbage and accidentally set fire to the whole mountain.
The valuable lesson of environmental awareness from this case will not slip the mind of both the authorities and individuals and even to me.
